Enlisting and Providing Support Blog 4

Question you have with which your colleagues may be able to provide help and support
I would just like to have some suggestions on what type of parent involvement would be enriching to start with for the child and the parent.

Resources and information you are seeking
I am seeking resources and information that will show that parent involvement can help in a child's developmental process.

Resources and/or information you have found helpful and insightful
I have found a lot of helpful resources that I will be using with my advocacy action plan. There are many helpful websites that serve as resources for parents, teachers and the community about advocacy issues on parent involvement and the importance of early literacy. I found the NAEYC,  zero to three.org, network with my site was very helpful in aiding me with resources and information. I found information and resources that explains the meaning of parent involvement and the different levels. One article is  Epstein Six Types of Parent involvement and another one is What is Parent Involvement?

  1. I would suggest inviting families into the classroom or to have a family event at the center, such as a book fair. In my research paper for ECE 450, I talked about how important family involvement is for a child’s literacy development. I found there is a connection between family involvement and reading. Also, I did not know there were different levels of family involvement, I appreciate you sharing this. Best of luck in completing the presentation.

  2. Vanessa,
There are several things that I can suggest to you to aid in parent involvement. In addition to Brooke's awesome idea of having a book fair for parent to participate, you could also invite parents to a read aloud, eat lunch with the kids, or volunteer for arts and crafts. One big idea that our facility did was sponsor a Family Fun Day which was also open to the community. This event included face painting, food, games, bouncy houses, raffles, and vendors such as Identi-Kid kits to aid in finding your child if lost/missing. This is a great idea and it takes alot of teamwork on the behalf of the parents and the facility. Our next one is coming up in September!

  3. I believe that parent involvement can be something as little as encouraging the students to walk their parents over to where one or your students have work posted in the classroom. Or during pickup, asking the parent to spend a few minutes to see what activity their child is engaged in. Sometimes parents have to take baby steps in order to get them involved in something.

  4. I believe in my situation the staff was not welcoming to the families. The parents were never greeted in the morning by the teacher or administrators. I encouraged the teachers to reach out to the parents in the morning and at pick up letting them know what took place in the classroom, what activities they done, and speak of nothing but good things. Once the teachers saw the response they got from the parents things started changing for the good at the center.

  5. Hi Vanessa, like I told Nakia parent involvement is very important in any child’s life in order to be successful. One suggestion is that you can invite parents to volunteer in you classroom, then another suggestion you can organize a literacy night because most parents try to show –up to these events, and in my experience parents and children enjoy it a lot. I am sure you will have very good ideas, and will find great resources. I wish you the best in your presentation, and in your advocacy.

  8. I believe parent involvement should be for enjoyment and not always work. It is enough that parent go to work for about 8 hours a day and then have to come to their child’s school/center for a meeting, conference or something serious. To get parent involved I suggest a family night of fun and games for the entire family. Other suggestions are a day of craft, career day for parents (share what they do in their child’s class) and also during the once a month parent meeting the school/center can include a dinner, so parent want have to worry too much about their child missing dinner. One last suggest is a reading day where parents can rotate to read a book to the children for a day.
I also have provided a website for you that talk about the Importance of Parent Involvement. It states how children can benefits and achieves various goals when the parents/family is involved in their child’s education.
